I absolutely loved it. It's been getting a lot of criticism for being somewhat cliche, but for me it so completely blew up everything I knew about the way a film could look that everything seemed completely fresh and new. I've always been highly critical of CGI, 3D film, and even HD for anything other than sports and documentaries, because I feel they interfere with willing suspension of disbelief. But in Avatar, it didn't feel like it was created on a computer, it actually felt like it was filmed on another planet. It created an entirely new truth.
I can completely understand how people would hate it, but it all really depends on how you approach the film. If you spend too much time analyzing plot and character and comparing them to other films, I guarantee you will hate everything about it. But if you let it create a new set of operating principles for you, it will be a magical experience.

...Okay, so I'm watching a movie. For most people, that means it has both visuals and a plot. From where Im sitting, the visuals are just fine, but the plot is not. And more importantly, the writing.
